Overview

Abacus Technology is seeking a Technical Writer/Editor to provide documentation support for Goddard Space Flight Center. This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities
    Prepare instruction manuals, how-to guides, journal articles, and other supporting documents to communicate complex and technical information more easily.
  • Develop, gather, and disseminate technical information through agency communications channels.
  • Use the interactive technologies of the Web and social media to blend text, graphics, multidimensional images, sound, and video.
  • Study product samples and talks with product designers and developers.
  • Work with technical staff to make products and instructions easier to use.
  • Write or revise supporting content for products.
  • Edit material prepared by other writers or staff.
  • Conduct research to ensure the use of proper technical terminology.
  • Organize material and write descriptive copy according to established standards for clarity and style.
  • Incorporate animation, graphs, illustrations, or photographs to increase users' understanding of the material.
  • Select appropriate medium, such as manuals or videos, for message or audience.
  • Standardize content across platforms and media.
  • Collect user feedback to update and improve content.
  • Help write grant proposals for research scientists and institutions.
Qualifications

8+ years experience in writing and editing. Bachelor's degree in a related field. Must be able to understand and discuss complex information with people of diverse occupational backgrounds. Able to research topics through visits to libraries and websites, discussions with technical specialists, and observation. Must be imaginative and detail-oriented with strong teamwork, critical thinking, technical and writing skills. Able to work under deadline pressure. Demonstrated ability to prepare communication materials that can be easily understood by a wide-range of readers. Must be proactive, creative, and customer and results-oriented. Must be highly organized and possess strong communication skills. Experience interfacing with people at all levels of an organization to obtain or provide facts and information. Must be a US citizen.
