OVERVIEW
Resident Teachers (RTs) participate in a unique program in which they acquire the knowledge, skills, and experience to become effective lead classroom teachers in urban school environments. Over a period of one to two years, depending on the Resident’s prior experience, she or he works in collaboration with a Lead Teacher in an early childhood or elementary classroom. The Resident receives frequent observations and coaching, as well as customized in-house professional development. Residents who demonstrate excellence and master relevant skills will have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Lead Teacher position at DC Prep at the end of their last year in the program.
Resident Teachers may also participate in American University’s Alliance for Quality Urban Education (AQUE) Program which provides partial scholarships to earn a Master’s Degree in Education and certification in their chosen subject area.

RESPONSIBILITIES
? Assist the Lead Teacher with daily planning;
? Work with individual or small groups of students in the Lead Teacher's classroom;
? In collaboration with the Lead Teacher, plan and implement lesson plans and units;
? Participate in school-related events outside of the classroom including school communities and family involvement activities;
? Help with various school functions, including but not limited to lunch and recess duty, study hall, school events, homework center, detention, and class coverage;
? Attend biweekly Resident Teacher meetings;
? Participate in all faculty professional development sessions including pre-opening orientation and training and weekly department and grade-level meetings;
? Seek out Lead Teachers, university professors, supervisors, and other administrators to maximize learning and become effective classroom teachers;
? Participate fully in graduate level classes and seminars; and
? Adhere to the high expectations of the DC Prep community.
QUALIFICATIONS
? Bachelor's degree;
? Strong undergraduate record;
? Previous experience working with children;
? Problem solving skills;
? A desire to work as a team player with other teachers, staff, and parents;
? Maturity and personal stability sufficient for a demanding teaching position;
? Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
? Flexibility;
? Commitment to urban education and desire to make a long-term contribution to bridging the educational divide; and
? A continuous desire for personal improvement.
